I've always taken my kids out in public right away because I figure they are so full of my immune system that they will be ok. I know lots of people who do not, though.<br /><br />I'm with you on the second-hand smoke. You could always have people over and just let them know ahead of time that you aren't going to go into a lot of trouble (I'd think they'd understand). Maybe even have everyone bring dishes and you either just do the meat or buy it from somehwere??
