Life lately

Oh, hi.....

I always have these great intentions of getting back on the blog train, but let's fact it - life is crazy. Which I totally love, don't get me wrong, blogging is just taking a back seat. So I've decided not to hold myself to posting every day, every other day, or even once a week.
  • Baby Ender was born last Tuesday! She is beautiful!!!

  • I didn't get to go see her until Friday because hubs and I both got sick early Wednesday morning. Blech. But when we met on Friday night, it was pure love.
Be still my ovaries!

  • My desk was sporting some interesting additions last week. Love this photo of my boys :)

  • No matter how old you are, you still want your mom when you are sick. Especially when it's 4 a.m. and you are cleaning up your mess.
  • Mister Cooper had his nine month well check on Tuesday. He is 20 pounds and 28 inches. 48th and 50th percentiles. Absolutely perfect, according to the doctor.
  • On Mondays, hubby often leaves the house before C makes it out of bed. So I try to take a picture to send with a good morning message :)
When I washed this sleeper, I thought it was way to tall for my boy. But to my dismay, it fits perfectly.

  • Poor baby has been going through some separation anxiety. We are told this is perfectly normal, but it's troubling. Our sweet boy wants to be held all the time {teething may play a role in this ...} and is having a tough time going to sleep. We used to be able to sing, give him hugs and kisses and lie him down, but now it takes a bit of back rubbing and consoling, then ultimately letting him cry a few minutes. Breaks my heart.
  • Little Mister is also sporting a new tooth! He now has the bottom middle ones, and the top middle and eye to the right of his mouth. The other two on top will be coming through any day.
  • The 5K we are planning to run is in just under two weeks! After taking a week off of running due to the silly stomach bug, we headed out yesterday and I just about made it 2.5 miles. I'm hoping to get in a good three-miler later this week. That being sad, I won't be devastated if I have to walk part of the 5K, but would love to run the whole thing.
  • My hometown has a "Neighbor Days" festival every year over Labor Day weekend, so we took Super Cooper there this weekend. He had fun!

  • He also loves his second cousin, Morgan :) Seriously he did not want to let her go!
  • Gosh I love that gummy grin

  • I've only worked three days each the past two weeks. Totally not looking forward to five this week.
  • This weekend we decided to visit the park. Unfortunately the one we ended up at didn't have the little kids swings, but C seemed to have a lot of fun going down the slide with his dada.

Things I will never again take for granted

Between a new job and baby, there have been a lot of changes in my corner of the world in the past year. Sometimes I find myself doing something I haven't done in a long time, and laugh at how nice it is to do it again.

Such as ...
  • Sleeping on my tummy & flat on my back. Although now that it's tough to sleep on my side if I wake up after 3 a.m., I'm kinda missing that too.
  • Eating deli meat. Oh my word. I craved Subway like none other while pregnant. For the longest time after Cooper was born, I just had a deli sandwich for lunch every day and it was heavenly.
  • Being able to sleep past 8 a.m.
  • Leaving the house. It used to be so easy, now it's more of a production.
  • Wearing whatever I want. Today I rebelled and decided to wear a non-pumping friendly dress to work and just brought shorts to wear while I pump.
  • Having time to myself. I relish my bath time every night.
  • Having a sane mind. I forget things all the time. Yesterday, I left my pump at home, but thankfully noticed after leaving the babysitters. That could have been painful.
  • Evenings at home with my boys. I'm having to help with some night presentations now, and I hate not getting my full 3-4 hours.
  • A date night. So much work in getting a sitter, packing everything up or getting all the instructions together, etc. Hubs and I have only been out three times alone since C was born.
  • Grocery shopping after work. We now go on the weekends.
  • Knowing everything that was going on in town. I still do to an extent, but not nearly as much.
  • Only working 32 hours a week. Obviously the paychecks weren't as nice, but I had the time to clean my house and do laundry.
  • Getting a mileage check. Most of my driving now is getting to & from work {especially when I go to our main campus} so reimbursement doesn't apply :(
  • The ability to cook a time-intensive dinner. It only happens on the weekends these days.
  • How nice it is to have a bare-ish room. Plastic has taken over our living room and we're considering moving the swing downstairs this weekend since it hasn't been used in a week or two. I can only imagine it getting worse.
  • How precious it is to have a sweet little boy, full of love and smiles! Makes the craziness worth it. Even if he weren't so exceptional :)

Hank Dog

This is a post I never wanted to write. It's tough and I really don't want to. But hey, this is my journal and I use it to share both the ups AND downs.

Hank Dog went to Heaven last week. He was around 11.5 years old.

Looking back, I'd say his downturn began in December. We began to notice Hanky Poo was gaining weight and losing muscle. Ignorantly, we figured it was just because he wasn't getting as much exercise, as we were so wrapped up with our new bundle of joy and the cold weather.

In early January, however, hubby said that something just wasn't right. All of Hank's weight seemed to be going to his belly, and he practically looked pregnant. So, we took him to the vet and she checked for heartworms and some other things. None of the tests were positive, but his heartbeat was irregular, so we put him on some meds for that.

Fast forward a month and it was the same situation. So back to the vet we went. This time, she diagnosed it as congestive heart failure and changed up the perscription. Although the meds would be necessary daily, she was fairly confident he would be back to normal.

For a long time, he did seem to be getting better. His cough got bad again, so we did increase one of his dosages, but things seemed fine.

Until last Wednesday. Hank received his meds twice a day and we put them in a small piece of bread to make it easier for him to take. That morning, hubby said Hank didn't seem to be doing well and didn't take the "treat."

He did the same thing that night. Y'all, our dog who is SO energetic wouldn't go more than about 20 steps without stopping and absolutely would not take his medicine. So, we left him outside to roam. A couple hours later, I looked outside expecting him to be on the porch, but noticed him walking in the field across our house, where he likes to roam. By dark, he still hadn't come home, so hubby went to find him. We know that dogs often go away to die and were afraid of that.

After about 10 minutes, hubby found Hank and they walked home. J told me the only way he got Hank to come was to say "let's go for a ride" (our Poosky LOVES rides in Daddy's truck) so I insisted hubby take him for one - Mister Cooper was napping or we would have joined. They went for a short ride, and once they got home, we situated Hank with his bed, water and some food in the back of the truck, as that is one of his favorite places.

That night, we checked on Hank about every 30 minutes. Before bed, we kissed & hugged him and told him how much we love him.

The next morning, we were terrified, but so grateful Hank was alive. But it was pretty much the same story that day. We situated him on the side of the house. Hubby covered him with a blanket and we checked on him frequently until going to bed.

Friday was my early morning at work, and I had to leave the house around 5:30. When Hank wasn't by the house, I freaked out. But as I drove to the Highway, I saw him at the end of the drive. I got out of the car, hugged and kissed him and told him I loved him. When hubby left for work an hour later, Hank was on the other side of the highway, and he did the same.

That afternoon, hubby came home and saw Hank had gone to Heaven. He had returned to our property and was lying on the side of the house. He looked so peaceful.

Hubby's brother came over later in the afternoon and helped us bury our sweet, beloved dog. We put him by a tree where he loved to lie, and sent his bed, blanket, and favorite "bird" that he loved to chew on with him.

Hank dog was the best pet we could ever have. I didn't even like dogs and was originally scared of him, but he is such a sweet, loving animal. There are so many times that I was upset with hubby (back in the day) & Hank would just sit there and listen to me, or lick me while I cried. He loved all kinds of kids, especially Cooper - he would even let them ride on him like a horse. I said that Cooper must have been part of the reason his heart failed - he just loved so much, his little heart couldn't handle it.

Hanky Poo loved playing in the water and just being around people. He really taught me a lot about the simple things in life - all it took to make him happy was a little attention. Saying "load up" or "let's go for a ride" would literally make his tail start spinning like a windmill. If we got angry with him, he was quick to forgive & forget.

We miss our big oaf so much. However, we are so grateful for the six years that we got to love him and put up with his antics, like escaping from his pen (including getting out of an eight-foot privacy fence!) We also consider ourselves blessed that we got a bit of warning - last Wednesday, we both knew the end was near, which is why we didn't bother to call the vet. Although it pained us to see him that way, the two days we got to cry and prepare our hearts, plus let him know just how loved he was, were invaluable.

Please, love on your pets tonight. You never know when you might lose them. And Hank Dog, we love you. You were the best & the worst.

shake, rattle and roll

So, we had a little excitement in southeast Missouri this morning - a 4.0 earthquake.

The epicenter was within 10 miles of my house! It rattled so much, I actually thought for a minute the house was ripping in two.

Image from the USGS website
You know how people always say babies can sense things like earthquakes? I TOTALLY believe it now. Mr. Cooper has been doing a great job of sleeping through the night and I don't even remember the last time he woke up before 5 a.m. But around 3:15, I heard him sorta whimpering, so after a few minutes, I got his pacifier, figuring that would help soothe him back to sleep. About 10 minutes later, he was whining again, so I fed him. No more than 10 minutes after I got back to bed {at 3:58 a.m. to be exact} the earthquake hit. Coincidence?

Oddly enough, he didn't make a peep and when I checked on him, he was sound asleep.

Of course, when I logged onto Facebook this morning I saw there was a huge party on there at 4 a.m. Ha! Don't you love how the first thing we do is update our Facebook after something like that?

And this is the image circulating this morning, which simply cracks me up.

All in all, I'm glad that we're safe and there is no damage. And I'm considering shelling out the big bucks to add earthquake insurance to my home.

Wouldn't it be nice ...

... if I've been hoping to get Cooper to sleep longer stretches at night - then when he finally does (six hours straight!) I wake up after about 4.5 and keep checking on him until he decides to wake up.

... if I decided to take a shower while the baby was sleeping only to get out and realize I forgot to wash myself. So I get back in and think maybe I washed myself after all? But then decided what the heck, I'd rather wash twice than be the stinky girl.

... if I finally got the motivation to decorate for Christmas only to realize that the tote with most of our Christmas stuff was growing mold. There were cracks on the bottom. And it resides on the floor. In the basement. That flooded this spring.

... if I still haven't changed my driver's license to my married name because I LOVE my picture on my current license. And it doesn't expire until February :)

... if I plug in the Christmas tree first thing in the morning so I can look at it while I work.

... if I am torturing my child by having him watch The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Kourtney and Kim Take New York. Hey, he gets sucked into it just like his mommy!

... if I daydream about the pre-mixed margaritas in my fridge. I'm trying to hold out until NYE to drink.

... if I can't make up my mind on what to do for Christmas cards/birth announcements. And it's only 5 days until Christmas.

... if I have a load of laundry washing for the THIRD time because I keep forgetting to put it in the dryer.

... if I had three loads of laundry clean, just waiting to be folded. Poor hubby sifts through the baskets to get ready for work in the mornings.

... if I complain some of my work pants are still a bit snug but am constantly munching on treats.

... if my Christmas baking for the year will likely consist of cookies (the kind in the big tubs from Sam's) and brownies. Because I've eaten all the oreo balls and toffee my mom helped me make last week.

What do you have to add to this list?

Friday randoms

  • Work from home is going OK. I don't have a lot to do yet, so it hasn't been too horrible. Of course, my little assistant is a great helper too :)
  • For the past hour, he's been sitting in his car seat, watching The Bold and the Beautiful and Kourtney and Kim Take New York. Haha.
  • Cooper had a good dr. appointment yesterday. He's at 9 lbs. 11 ounces (still 2 ounces shy of birth weight) and the same height. Around 75th percentile for each. Typically doctors like to see babies back at birth weight two weeks later, but the ped didn't seem concerned. He said Coop looked and seemed healthy and to be growing. Plus, he noted that all scales are different so Coop very well could be back at birth weight according to the hospital scale so we shouldn't worry.
  • I'm not happy with the Social Security Administration/US Postal Service. Earlier this week, Cooper's social security card came in the mail. And we notice on the front of the envelope, there is a post-it note that said "delivered to wrong address. opened accidentally." Um, what? So I proceed to call SSA and ask they issue my son a new number, since some other idiots have opened his mail. I mean, who does that? We've received others' mail before but I never open it - especially something that is clearly a legal document. But SSA refused to issue a new number. I think it was an honest mistake, but I'm terrified someone is going to steal my son's identity. GRRRR. Get it together, people!
  • Hank Dog is getting fat because we don't like letting him run after dark. And it's dark by the time hubby gets home - and I'm too lazy to walk outside to let him out during the day. Bad mom.
  • I need to have someone come decorate my house for Christmas. Between staring at/caring for my lovebug and now doing work from home, there simply aren't enough hours in the day.
  • I also need to do holiday baking.
  • I've decided to combine Coop's birth announcement with a holiday card. Which probably won't go out in the mail until after Christmas. Oh well, it's the thought that counts, right?
  • Cooper has asked to go see Santa but I'm too much of a germophobe to allow him to go to a public place. Luckily I know a guy who dresses up every year so I think I'm going to have him come to the house next week and get some photos.
  • I'm kinda waiting for the shoe to drop in terms of Christmas gatherings this year. The past two years, since we moved into our house, J and I have hosted for his family. But every time we have his family over, it turns into a huge undertaking, and I end up cleaning up after some of the kids - I guarantee you, whenever Coop is older, I will be checking up on him before we leave somewhere to be sure he's cleaned up the mess. And now with a baby, I don't have the time to clean my house to get ready for everyone, prepare a meal, then clean up after 20 people. The thing is, though, that the rest of his family either smokes or allows smoking in their house, which I don't feel comfortable with. So there's a chance that Coop and I will be staying home and letting others come over a family at a time over the holidays. I feel kinda crazy saying that, but the risk of SIDS increased with secondhand smoke exposure, amongst other risks, and I just don't want to mess with all that.
  • I cannot survive without my daily nap.
  • I also cannot survive without some sort of chocolate every day.
  • This post is an annoying block of text because I am too lazy to download photos or email them from my phone.
  • Happy weekend!

It's the little things ...

I hate being the couple in the restaurant staring at one another.

J doesn't get it. To him, being quiet is just about relaxing and enjoying the moment. To me, it's about having NOTHING to talk about --- and I just don't see how that's possible for two people who work and are apart from each other the majority of the work week.

But yesterday, I think I finally made him understand. We were outside, playing with Hank and watering the horses. I look over to our neighbors' house and see them each sitting on a swing that's opposite from the other.

I always want to be on the same swing. And I told him that. And I think he gets me a little more now.

Is anyone else freaked out by the idea of being old and losing the spark? Because I think my neighbors have...
